The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Song

This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

All in all, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its mood is a little off.

Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
