The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Total Faith' in Youngster Pitarch
Whenever a teenage makes club a historic moment in a pivotal European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.
During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight berth.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica
This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.
He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.
He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'
In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to train with the senior squad and gave him playing time during pre-season.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, every day you head to training and each day you have a game," said Pitarch following his first appearance.
"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has taken it with performances that have belied his youth and experience.
"He is a very quick player, and you can see what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his personality," continued he. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize fans might be astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to do what he usually does.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a player like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.
He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a official senior international match.
Pitarch has featured for Spain at underage levels, representing both the U19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his progress with interest.
In a recent interview, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While teenage Yamal chose La Roja, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club pursue trophies to come.
After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to earn my minutes on the field," he commented following the win at Etihad Stadium.
