The Two Fatalities Identified in the Providence Campus Shooting as Authorities Persist in Manhunt for Perpetrator.

Two students who were killed in the weekend's mass shooting at Brown University had tributes paid to them on Monday – as a manhunt for their shooter persisted following the release by local law enforcement of the sole person detained in connection in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was remembered as “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, as stated by the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which paid tribute to her at a gathering on Sunday.

Her role included the vice-presidency of Brown’s division of the College Republicans organization, as the club stated. The White House press secretary also expressed condolences online, saying in part: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her family and friends, above all her mom and dad.”

The Second Victim

The other deceased individual was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his initial year at the prestigious university, according to relatives.

The victim's identification was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and assisting patients,” his sibling Samira said in a online post.

The Shooting Incident

An additional nine individuals were wounded in the violent event in the engineering department of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Law enforcement reported late Sunday that a 24-year-old male detained in a raid at a hotel about around 27 kilometers from the university earlier in the day was being released.

“There is a killer at large,” declared Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.

He continued, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you have to regroup and pursue a different angle, and this is precisely what occurred over the last 24 hours or so.”

Community Anxiety

Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, noted: “This will probably generate fresh anxiety for our public”.

The gunman opened fire inside a room in the engineering building on Saturday afternoon, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm handgun, a police source told the news agency.

Police that searched the hotel seized two handguns and magazines when the suspect was detained, the news agency reported.

Those Hurt

Among those wounded, one pupil was allowed to go home, stated the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in critical but stable condition, and another was critically ill, authorities stated on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a independent school in Durham, North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

Cook was remembered at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at the university she was a radiant presence in that specific location as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the group. “Ella was known for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she worked for her branch and peers,” he said.

Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the student's death in a statement. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, companions, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his bright future.”

Broader Statistics

The weekend's murders at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US university with about 7,300 undergraduate and postgraduate students, happened during one of at least 392 shooting incidents reported in the US so far in 2025, according to statistics. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
