UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"It's a unique experience where a young woman containing several personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct souls, all possessing their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.

Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, while other scenes show the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.

A World of Individual Dread

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."

The core gameplay loop involves managing whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the girl one after another. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity standing might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
